Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a major health concern in the Nyanza region of Kenya, where the prevalence of the condition is notably high. Nyanza, particularly, is one of the regions with the highest incidence of sickle cell disease in the country, largely attributed to the region’s proximity to malaria-endemic areas.
SickleCell and
MALARIA
The relationship between malaria and sickle cell is significant; individuals with sickle cell trait have a partial protective advantage against malaria, leading to a higher frequency of sickle cell trait and disease in the population. However, this has not translated to a reduction in the burden of SCD, which continues to place immense strain on the healthcare system.
Projekt
CHALLENGES
(Info: 1 Euro = 130-150 Kenyanshillings)The management of SCD in Nyanza is hindered by the high cost of essential medications, including hydroxyurea, proguanil, folic acid, and penicillin V. Hydroxyurea, a critical drug for reducing the frequency of painful crises in SCD patients, costs approximately 26 shillings per capsule. Proguanil, used for malaria prophylaxis, costs 35 shillings per tablet, while penicillin V, crucial for preventing infections, costs 5 shillings per tablet. Folic acid, an essential supplement, is priced at 1 shilling per tablet. Given that patients with SCD typically require daily use of these medications, the monthly cost of treatment for one patient is approximately 3,030 shillings, and the annual cost reaches 36,360 shillings. This financial burden is a significant challenge for families, particularly those in low-income settings.
Life Long
CHALLENGE
Despite these high costs, advanced treatments such as gene therapy and stem cell transplantation remain out of reach for the majority of the population due to a lack of availability and accessibility within Kenya. The limited access to these therapies further exacerbates the difficulties faced by patients and their families, making SCD a lifelong challenge.
Longterm
PLAN
Since 2025, we have made it our mission to provide children and young people aged 0–18 with the essential medication they need on a monthly basis. By doing so, we aim to reduce school absenteeism and save lives.
Through education and awareness about sickle cell disease, we also help children regain confidence and courage. They should know that they are not cursed or less worthy than other children. They have the right to learn, play, participate in school activities, and live their lives fully.
Currently, 18 children are successfully receiving monthly support through sponsorships.
Our goal is to provide regular medical support to 100 children by the end of 2027.
We welcome your support – together, we can change and save lives.
HISTORY
Sickle Cell Disease
Epidemiologically, the prevalence of sickle cell disease in Nyanza is concerning, with a notable portion of the population affected by the condition. Studies show that the region exhibits a higher frequency of sickle cell trait carriers, with an estimated 2-3% of the population living with sickle cell disease. This situation calls for targeted interventions, including improved access to treatment and preventive measures, enhanced healthcare infrastructure, and more affordable medication to alleviate the burden of sickle cell disease in the region. The government, in collaboration with international partners, must prioritize the development of more sustainable treatment options and the provision of genetic counseling to reduce the incidence of new cases.

We as an organization focus on improving healthcare access in the region, have identified a critical gap in the management of sickle cell disease through our free medical camps in Nyanza. During these camps, we have encountered numerous sickle cell patients who present with complications resulting from the failure to take daily medications. In response, Doki’s Advice has made it a priority to provide sickle cell patients with free medication and even sponsor their medical insurance coverage. This ensures that patients receive the necessary treatment when they fall ill, significantly reducing the burden of the disease.
